Local SEO in Canada: A Practical Checklist for Small Businesses

SEO for Google and AI search results

When someone nearby searches for a service like yours, Google decides in a fraction of a second which businesses appear in the map results and which websites rank below them. Local SEO is the work of making sure your business is one of them.

This checklist covers the steps that matter most for Canadian small businesses, in the order we usually tackle them. You do not need to do everything at once, but each step builds on the one before it.

1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile is often the first thing a local customer sees, before they ever visit your website. Claim it, verify it and fill in every field that applies to your business.

  • Choose the most accurate primary category, then add secondary categories for other services you offer.
  • Add your service areas if you visit customers, or your exact address if customers visit you.
  • Write a clear business description that mentions your main services and the cities you serve.
  • Upload real photos of your team, location, vehicles and work, and keep adding new ones.
  • Set accurate opening hours, including holiday hours.
  • List your services or products with short descriptions.

2. Keep your name, address and phone number consistent

Search engines compare your business details across the web. Your name, address and phone number (often called NAP) should match on your website, Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, Facebook and the directories your customers use, such as industry associations or your local chamber of commerce.

Small differences, like “Unit 5” on one site and “#5” on another, are worth fixing when you find them. Old addresses and phone numbers from a previous location are even more important to clean up.

3. Create a page for each service and location

One general “Services” page rarely ranks for specific searches. Give each main service its own page that explains what you do, who it is for, how pricing works and how to get started.

If you serve several cities, create location pages with genuinely useful local information, such as the neighbourhoods you cover, local projects and travel or delivery details, rather than copying the same text with a different city name. This page structure is where our SEO services usually begin.

4. Make your website fast and easy to use on a phone

Most local searches happen on phones. Check that your pages load quickly on a mobile connection, your phone number is tappable, buttons are easy to press and forms are short. Google’s free PageSpeed Insights tool shows where your site is slow and why. If your website is holding you back, a faster, mobile-first website supports every other step on this list.

5. Earn reviews consistently

Reviews influence both rankings and buying decisions. The most reliable approach is simple: ask every happy customer, at the moment they are happiest, with a direct link to your review page.

Reply to every review, positive or negative, politely and professionally. Never buy reviews or offer rewards in exchange for positive ones. It breaks Google’s policies and misleads customers.

6. Add local business schema

Structured data, or schema markup, helps search engines understand your business type, address, hours and services. LocalBusiness or ProfessionalService schema on your website, matching your Google Business Profile, is a small technical step that supports everything else.

7. Build local links and mentions

Links and mentions from other local and industry websites show search engines that your business is real and relevant. Good sources include suppliers and partners, local associations, community event sponsorships, local news coverage and helpful guest articles. Focus on relevance, not volume.

8. Track calls, forms and direction requests

Local SEO is only worth doing if it brings customers. Set up Google Analytics 4 and Google Search Console, track form submissions and phone calls from your website, and review the calls, website clicks and direction requests reported in your Google Business Profile each month.

How long does local SEO take?

Fixing your profile, website basics and business details can make a difference within weeks. Ranking in competitive cities like Toronto, Mississauga or Vancouver usually takes several months of steady work on content, reviews and links.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a physical address for local SEO?

No. Service-area businesses, such as contractors and mobile services, can hide their address on Google Business Profile and list the areas they serve instead. You still need a real business location to verify the profile.

Should I create a separate page for every city?

Only for cities where you genuinely work and can say something useful, such as projects completed there, areas covered or travel details. Thin pages that only swap the city name rarely help.

Can I do local SEO myself?

Many of the steps in this checklist, like completing your profile, asking for reviews and keeping details consistent, can be done in-house. Technical work, content planning and competitive markets are where outside help usually pays off.

The businesses that win locally are rarely the ones with the biggest budgets. They are the ones that keep going. If you would like a second opinion on your local visibility, contact DigiParter for a review of your Google Business Profile and website.
